Typogun is a very original twist on the classic overhead turret game, in which advancing enemies display a word near themselves, and typing the word correctly causes the central turret to shoot at them, usually killing them. Enemies often leave behind powerups which are grabbed the same way. The enemies gradually get tougher and more dangerous and appear more often, demanding quicker and cleaner typing responses from the player. Stages are organized by the type of vocabulary the enemies will be displaying.
Both gameplay and graphics in typogun are among the most impressive I have ever seen in a gm game, and are unquestionably professional. I could find no bugs anywhere in anything and I never ceased to be impressed by the amazing use of particles, alpha rendering, and genius graphic design. The explosions and projectiles remind me heavily of the non-gm game Soldat, which is considered by many to be the best free game available. I am stumped as to how the programmer pulled off such impressive effects without cutting into the game's fps.
Besides having smooth, clean gameplay, Typogun also has an incredible amount of polish, from the fading transitions to the scrolling menu buttons to the flashing display when you press enter during the game. Even progress bars and other basic GUI elements are detailed and bordered, and Pondwater has somehow managed to keep the game's file size reasonable despite so many graphical frills and even non-midi music.
About that music. Typogun is equipped with two different, suitable mp3s that are included externally to improve loading time and so you can replace them with your own mp3s of the same filename. It also has a set of crisp, realistic, well placed sound effects, about which nothing bothers me. The sound in this game is exactly how one might want it, even though it offers nothing amazingly special or new. If this were a GM game with less brilliant gameplay, the sound would seem a lot more impressive in comparison.
Amazingly well presented and polished as this game is, I do have a couple small complaints. First, even though the game gets continuously harder, it caps the difficulty eventually, and that cap came too soon for me. I usually have to quit before I die. Since skill at typing depends on the player, the difficulty may be just right for some people, but not others. What the game needs is a small test before the game starts that collects a general speed the player can type at, so that it can set the difficulty cap accordingly. The other thing that I was surprised not to find was a high score table of any kind, despite the all-out arcade action this game is full of. In spite of those two problems, I think this game will be on my hard drive for quite awhile.
Highs: Stunningly professional gameplay and graphics, original concept and well done sound
Lows: No high score system, difficulty could be adjusted

This game teaches you how to type fast better than any other program available because it gives you a reason to type fast, so you can win. Highscore table would make me type even faster. Man can I type fast now!
This is VERY well made! I like the effects, and GREAT menus (as stated before).
The Words per minute don't seem right to me, but they do show if your speed is improving, so it's great for the game. The SFX and music fit perfectly,
and no prob.s with the control. All and all, addicting=fun! Definitely a game I'll share and keep. Now I've played it enough where i'm spelling 'color' as 'colour' though, but that's only a mild side effect :D
Wow amazing, I know a English Teacher who would really like that!, but could you make another version maybe a little more kiddish?, you would attract the younger ages, but could game here are you stats, from me:
Graphics 11/10 lol
Gameplay 12/10 addicting!
Controls 11/10 Wow!, typing? how intricate.
Frustration 5/10 the lower the better.
Well I will definitaly look at this game more carefully, and play it more, thanks make a version 2.00!
This game is just awsome I was playing so long its so addictive my mom playes it too she likes it so much, she played over 31 minutes on one round! Well, heres my review:
Graphics: 10/10 Outstanding graphics. I've never seen any gm game with graphics as good as these excellent work.
Gameplay: 9/10 Amazing game play, addictive and you even learn while you play. (volcabulary and typing speed)
Stlye: 10/10 I really like how this game was set up the options, the levels everything.
Fun: 9/10 this is fun but it does get boring after a long while but still very fun and addicting.
The Making: 10/10 I can't belive you made such a good game using game maker I can't do almost everything you did to make this game, it looks like you put alot of effrot into it.
Once again great job I hope you make a sequal or another game similar to it!
Great game! This game can be very addictive. Educational and fun, who ever thought those two can go together so well. It will take a keen hand-eye coordination to play as well as going to phase 10.
LOL!!! I am not English or american or whatever, so I could learn some new words from this game and use them to confuse my friends with those weird words which you actually never hear in normal life. Maybe my english teacher will not know the words as well, so:
Graphics: 9/10 Nice spriting and that kind of nagging
Sound: 8/10 Nice music and gunfire sounds
Gameplay: 10/10 best GM gameplay which I have played!
Replay: 8/10 Addictive, but not that addictive
Style: 10/10 Very original. No more comment
GM skills: 10/10 Just not imaginable how skilled you have to be with GM to create this game. Fabulous!
no way am i ever going to throw this game away. it is the best typing game since...well, okay, since nothing (but only because all the other typing games are very boring. this one got me hooked the first time i played it.)
Wow, I don't like typing much but this game ROCKS! It's really fun for awhile and whenever I'm bored I play it. It's pretty cool. The graphics are really nice, I just wish you could have a difficulty level. Like, you can make the objects move faster or slower. That would be cool. Pretty good.
Its great.... my friends play like crazy even though exam is near..Every one of us really enjoy the game. One of them even make it to phase 7 (I think its max), and play for 45 minutes. I nvr thought that GM can make such a good game. This game will always stay on my hard drive. :)
Good game, 'cause it teaches people to wright with
computers! I love the sounds when I type the word, press enter and clicks-boom, the box is being exploded.
Amazing! Who cares about graphics as long as the game is good. i think this game is awesome. I used to suck at typing but now im good and i learned a fun way! By the way I typed this in 8 seconds!
Very well made, although the music on the main menu is a little on the 'stoned drummer' side...
Typing is fun. But this game is limited. What it needs is an online scoreboard, online co-op or competitive play, and more words. Way more words. I'd also enjoy being able to move my turret with typing, like 'north' 'west' north west' 'freaking stop already omg'.
It really doesn't feel educational, which is what all education people are trying to do create fun educational games, but there just not gamers. This is really fun, and you get great typing skills from it. Might want to drop this by your nearest middle school for a look in their typing class.
LOL!!!!!! I got 102 wpm!!! LOL!! how did i do this you ask? Simple... i edited the words that come out!! i just open up the thingy that said lefthand exercises in the folder and edited all to say 'a'. LOLLOLLOL!!!!! i rock!!!!!
this sound crazy! But do some one know a programer
that can make games with 3d tools like 3ds max,CharacterShop, and so on. i can toose so go in on my game lorty2
Very addictive, It's a lot of fun to see how fast you can type. Only problem is with me, when I'm rushed I get all frantic and make a bunch of typos, but I guess that's the purpose of typogun isn't it XD
In case anyone is interested in making their own 'library' of words, copy one of .DAT files that are in the file, rename it, and open it with WordPad. You should see something like this:
Whatever the title is
a number
a number
a number
a number
