Minubeat is a rhythm-based shmup with more to it than a first glance would indicate. The gameplay is heavy on strategy as well as reflexes; mastering the game takes a while, but it's a lot of fun.

The gameplay is pretty typical bullet hell fare; you are a tiny, fast-moving ship with some very powerful guns, against big, tough enemies with even more powerful guns. The twist is that the entire game revolves around a simple rhythm; the enemies shoot in compliment to the beat, and in order to use your special weapons (seeking missles and a bullet-vanishing ability, controlled with the X and C buttons), you've got to press your buttons in time as well, though you can fire normally with Z. The game consists of a single level that takes about one minute to complete; however, you'll probably end up playing the game a lot of times before you're able to do that.

The graphics have a definite cactus flair to them, though they differ from his other games. There's not much to say about them that that screenshot up there won't tell you, except that there are some pretty nifty little effects with the explosions and the moving background. The sound is simple - just a bunch of flanged percussive sounds. The flange makes them almost hypnotic, though, which in turn makes the game more engaging and less frustrating than it otherwise might have been.

Final verdict? Like much of cactus' work, it's a tiny, well-polished and starkly original granule, and you'll probably either love it or hate it. I happen to love it, and I say give it a try. Sure, it's only one minute. But it's a good minute.

It's only the dying element that makes the one minute stretch into an hour...

Ok, for some reason, I think I am dying for no reason on the boss level... I don't see anything hitting me, and somehow I am dying... I would like if you put more into this though... It's only one level.

It's not a bad little game. I'm a fan of shoot 'em ups, so you know you're gonna get a good rating. :) I like the design. Reminds me of Fractal Fighter a bit. I'm glad I could change from light to dark, since the light setting was a little tough to see things in. I don't know what F1 is supposed to do, let alone how to tell what your score is unless it gets submitted. The intro told me to follow the beat, but I didn't understand that I had to press C and X with the beat until later. A readme or help file might have helped. Aside from that, it's pretty good. The style is similar to what you've done in the past, not that that's a bad thing. The rhythm idea is somewhat original. It's challenging and fun. It'll keep me amused for a while, but once I beat it I'm not sure how much replay value it will have. 8/10

It might just be my computer, but I think the beat is a little off. Still, fun, addicting game.
